First off, you're conflating statist socialism (a/k/a communism) with democratic socialism. The difference is that the first -- practiced in the countries you named -- benefits the state, which controls the means of production, wages, and market prices. With democratic socialism, the state remains in control of the people, who decide what the government will control, such as state-sponsored schooling (like we have in the U.S. through high school graduation), road maintenance and expansion (again, like the U.S.), universal health care (we're not there yet)...

That said, check out this list of largely (if not entirely) Democratic Socialist countries, and tell me what's wrong with them:

Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, New Zealand, and Belgium.

(Oh, look! There's Canada!!)
